چکیده

The partial volume effect in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a problem for quantitative radiotracer studies. This effect results from the limited spatial resolution of the imaging device (a few mm’s). Two factors are involved; the spillover of radioactivity into neighbouring regions and the underlying tissue inhomogeneity of the particular region. Linear methods are currently used to correct for this effect on a regional level, using tissue classification from higher resolution imaging modalities, e.g. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which allows for the definition of anatomical regions which are assumed to be homogeneous in tracer concentration. We extend these methods to incorporate the underlying noise structure of the PET tomograph measurements, and develop fast algorithms to facilitate the computation of true tracer concentration estimates and their associated errors. We also investigate the possibility of using the noise models to infer whether the defined regions are homogenous.

Effect of scatter coincidences, partial volume, positron range and non-colinearity on the quantification of FDOPA Patlak analysis

Introduction: The key characteristics of positron emission tomography (PET) are its quantitative capability and its sensitivity, which allow the in vivo imaging of biochemical interactions with small amounts of tracer concentrations. Therefore, accurate quantification is important. However, it can be sensitive to several physical factors. The aim of this investigation is the assessment of the e...

Application of MRI-based partial-volume correction to the analysis of PET images of mu-opioid receptors using statistical parametric mapping.

UNLABELLED The accurate quantification of brain radioactivity concentration is limited by the spatial resolution of the PET scanner for structures smaller than 2-3 times the resolution. In the presence of enlarged cerebrospinal fluid spaces or regions of cortical neuronal loss, a significant underestimation of gray-matter radioactivity concentration due to the resulting partial-volume averaging...

An MR image-guided, voxel-based partial volume correction method for PET images.

PURPOSE Partial volume effect in positron emission tomography (PET) can cause incorrect quantification of radiopharmaceutical uptake in functional imaging. A PET partial volume correction method is presented to attenuate partial volume blurring and to yield voxel-based corrected PET images. METHODS By modeling partial volume effect as a convolution of point spread function of the PET scanner,...

Partial volume correction incorporating Rb-82 positron range for quantitative myocardial perfusion PET based on systolic-diastolic activity ratios and phantom measurements

BACKGROUND Quantitative myocardial PET perfusion imaging requires partial volume corrections. METHODS Patients underwent ECG-gated, rest-dipyridamole, myocardial perfusion PET using Rb-82 decay corrected in Bq/cc for diastolic, systolic, and combined whole cycle ungated images. Diastolic partial volume correction relative to systole was determined from the systolic/diastolic activity ratio, s...

Partial volume correction for positron emission images using the wavelet transform

A method for partial volume correction of positron emission tomography (PET) images is proposed. The method is based on combining information from PET and high resolution anatomical images. Two different algorithms fast wavelet transform and à trous were implemented in order to decompose the PET and high resolution images. Results obtained using several simulated images show a significant parti...

A Partial Volume Effect Correction Tailored for 18F-FDG-PET Oncological Studies

We have developed, optimized, and validated a method for partial volume effect (PVE) correction of oncological lesions in positron emission tomography (PET) clinical studies, based on recovery coefficients (RC) and on PET measurements of lesion-to-background ratio (L/B m) and of lesion metabolic volume. An operator-independent technique, based on an optimised threshold of the maximum lesion upt...
